While different coaches may have varying approaches to getting the job done, there are some key attributes that you’ll find are essential across the board. These 7 attributes are crucial in all sports coaches, at every level:

1. Embrace the human factor

A great coach admits when they are wrong or have made a mistake. Being able to admit that you are human and from time to time you may mess up is a good characteristic, as it builds trust in a team.

2. Honesty is the best policy

Even Olympic coaches need to know when to tell their athletes that what they are doing isn’t working or if another player is outperforming them. Coaches who are honest are respected, and are able to deal with difficult topics like team selection and a loss of form in an open and transparent way.

3. Clarity is key

Any decent coach knows that they need to have a plan, and to be clear about where they are heading. Whether it’s setting up a schedule of rugby training drills, like the ones available online at, or monitoring fitness levels consistently, clear intentions are always the best motivators.

4. Keep things fresh

Coaches that keep their training sessions fresh and interesting are far more likely to succeed in keeping players in top condition, and motivating them to perform. A bored athlete is never going to give their all.

Good energy in any team is a glue that binds, but bad energy can undo a team quickly too. Top coaches all know how to harness the good energy, and to get rid of any negativity quickly and effectively.

6. Share a vision

Every coach needs a plan and a vision as to where they want to take their team. This vision should be explained and the steps needed to reach the dream clearly outlined. Every athlete or player wants to get to the top, and the best coaches know how to inspire them and help them reach their goals.

7. Lead the leaders

A coach must be a strong leader, but they must also build a trust relationship with those leading the team. By giving the leaders responsibility and showing everyone care and attention, a cohesive bond is formed, and this can only benefit everyone.
