Defending Champions  go down fighting

The curtains  came down on the Africa Badminton Championships TEAM EVENTS today 20th April 2009 at the Moi Sports Complex Kasarani. Seychelles qualified for the finals this afternoon after beating Egypt 3-0.  Seychelles who are the defending champions started their bid by winning the Men Singles, Women Singles and Mixed Doubles to wrap it up and book a place in the Finals. In the other Semi Finals South Africa who were the runners up last year beat Mauritius 3-1 to qualify for the finals.

In the finals South Africa beat Mauritius 3-1 in a very pulsating final. In the Men Singles Chris Dednam of South Africa beat Steve Malcouzane (2-0)21-14, 24-22.  In the Women Singles Katherina Paulin of Seychelles then balanced the score by beating Stacey Doubel of South Africa(2-0) 21-18 24-22, in the Mixed Doubles in a game that lasted almost an hour Chris Dednam and Mitchell Edwards of South Africa beat Africa’s top seed Georgie Cupidon/Juliette  Ah - Wan  to go one game up. In the final game of the evening and in a very evenly balanced game that literally left the spectators sitting on the edge of their seats South Africa’s Men doubles pair of Chris Dednam and Dorian James beat the Seychelles pair of Georgie Cupidon and Steve Malcouzane (2-1) 21-18, 17-21, 19-21

The end of the team events now paves way for the Individual Events of the AFRICA BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIP. In the Individual events Nigeria, Zambia, Burundi and Ghana who missed out on the team events after arriving behind schedule will now have an opportunity to show case their talent when they come on court at 9.00 am. The categories to be contested are Women Singles, Men Singles, Men doubles, Women Doubles and Mixed Doubles. 
Day 1

The Africa Badminton Championships 2009 got off to a flying start in Nairobi, Kenya. The hosts Kenya started their campaign on a winning note beating Botswana, winning all the matches in the tie, 5 - 0.

The Men's singles and the mixed doubles were closely contested, Kenya players being pushed to a third set to decide the match.
